In detail

The problem

Most Christmas decorations are bought; few are made by hand and kept for years.

Why this one

Build it, then wind down with it. This 319-piece kit, designed for makers aged 14 and over, takes around 3 hours to build into a Christmas tree on a round musical base.

When it's done, the tree lights up and plays We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Jingle Bells and Deck the Halls while the scene moves. It's powered by a Type-C cable, not included.

Tiny stories in every detail01

Tiny stories in every detail

The finished piece shows Santa and his reindeer, a glowing star on top, a miniature train and festive ornaments. Each layer is pressed out from wooden sheets and assembled following the guide.

The maker designs it for ages 14 and over, with an estimated build time of around 3 hours.

Test first, then build02

Test first, then build

The base is powered by a Type-C cable, which is not included: any Type-C cable you already own will do. The maker advises connecting it and checking the light, music and motion before you start building.

Some small decorative parts may need extra securing, says the maker.

Three taps, three moods03

Three taps, three moods

Tap once for light, music and motion; twice for light only; a third time to switch off.

On a mantelpiece or a shelf it becomes the decoration everyone asks about.
